Hunting for rare books and dinosaur fossils (not at the same time) – South of the River with Alli Harding podcast on 23 July
With tales of fossils of monstrous prehistoric sharks and prized books worth thousands of dollars, it was a big afternoon on South of the River.
Alli Harding was joined in the studio by antiquarian bookseller Douglas Stewart, complete with his valuable ‘On the Origin of Species’ (Charles Darwin) and Australian first edition of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ (JK Rowling). Douglas talked about the joys and challenges of sourcing and selling rare books – and sadly, Alli failed in her attempt to lure him into buying one of her books.
Fossil hunter Ben Francischelli then arrived to chat about the huge variety of fossils on the sand, rocks and sea floor of Port Phillip Bay – and discussed the latest Barbie movie with Alli.
You can find out about the Melbourne Rare Book Fair on July 27 to 29 at rarebookfair.com – and more about Douglas’ work at douglasstewart.com.au
You can follow Ben, who is currently a curator at Bayside City Council, on instagram @a_fools_experiment and meet him at the fossil exhibition on 6 August at Beaumaris Secondary College.
